Making a difference

I don’t know if you have noticed but elected officials in our State Capitols and in Washington, DC have been very busy. That means REALTOR®S have been as well.

As a REALTOR®, you are a member of the largest trade organization in the country. Together we have a very loud collective voice. In May, 40 REALTOR®S from Maine along with thousands form all over the country traveled to Washington DC to talk with our elected officials to remind them of important issues for homeowners. We seem to talk about Flood Insurance every year and it was once again a topic of discussion. Did you know an estimated 40,000 transaction a month would not close if the NFIP were to lapse?

On a State level in Maine, we are opposing a bill that would allow for public access to all waterfront in the intertidal zone, the area between the high and low tides along with harvesting of rockweed. We were successful in beating this in the Senate and will continue to work on the opposition of this bill in the house.

Locally in Portland, ME we were able to obtain a grant from NAR to work against and kill a rent control ordinance the city was trying in enact. In York, ME again along with a grant from NAR we were able to oppose an ordinance for mandatory septic inspections at the sale of a property.

What can you do? I am so glad you asked! Please be involved, if you are sent a call to action, click on the button and send it along to your Senator or Representative. If your State Association has a rally day at the Capitol please attend. If there is an ordinance that is coming before your town with a real estate component to it such as rent control or mandatory testing then let your Association know.

Realtor Political Action Committee (RPAC) has always been something I am a big believer in. I have been a major investor for 9 years now. I thank all that contribute at any amount. In order to make the difference, we do we need to spend money on systems, lobbyist, relationships and campaigns. What we all do makes a difference for the industry as a whole and for homeowners.

Being involved in your Local, State and National Associations can be very rewarding. I have made many friends, received great referrals, given great referrals and learned so much from the many educational opportunities. I would be happy to talk with anyone about how they can be involved.

I have been very lucky in my career to have the opportunity to be involved in many levels as a Past Local then State Board President, Federal Political Coordinator and a current member of the Major Investor Council. I also currently sit on both my Local and State Boards. I love giving back to a community that has given me so much.

Under all is the land…
